Lockett Meadows during October is beautiful! All of the aspens are golden & it’s such a beautiful hike. It’s harder when the road up the mountain is closed (3.5 miles straight up a mountain took us roughly 2hrs before getting to the trailhead). But overall, so serene. We went during the eclipse & it’s a memory I’ll treasure forever.

The road leading up to the campground is still closed. If you want to hike the Inner Basin, be prepared to hike an extra 3 miles up to the campground. With the road closure, the hike was actually much more enjoyable as there was no one around. I did hear some people off in the distance, but for the most part I spent the afternoon hiking in completely solitude. Disclaimer. These photos are not recent. They were taken almost six weeks ago. At the end of the first week of October.

Hiked this 10/14/23 - road to the campground is still closed. Expect a 3.2 mile walk (860 elevation gain) to the campground meadow (small thicket of aspens and views up the San Francisco peaks were beautiful) there is a forest service out house style bathroom but NO WATER SOURCES. Then you go a bit farther through the campground to find the actual trail head. Another 2-3 mile walk with almost double the elevation gain before you get into the aspen forest. We did not go quite to the top, but the aspens were beautiful, just a couple switch backs up. 10.5 miles round trip and took us 6 hours with picture and lunch breaks.

The place is beautiful but prepare to take a long long walk to get to it. Is only kid friendly if your kids love to hike.

In a decommissioned ambulance. Went up the well maintained road, past the burn area warning signs, open gates. Lots of full roadside camping. Then encountered cones across road near a great turnaround point. I think i was close to campground and summit. Stopped to consider my options. Had great t mobile service, too low for scenery comment, wind was howling (i mean howling) and choking dust clouds. I gave a 3 on account of my concerns over fire and dust, plus I didn't get up to campground.

We had the whole place to ourselves. I'm guessing most people don't want to backpack in the 3 miles to get to the campground. I thought maybe it was closed but the website says it's opened. It was beautiful!

Lockett Meadow in Flagstaff, Arizona, is a must-see destination for nature lovers and hikers. My family and I recently visited the meadow on a day trip and were completely blown away by the beauty and serenity of the area. The meadow is surrounded by towering Ponderosa Pine trees and offers a picturesque setting for hiking and exploring. The leaves were changing colors and provided a stunning backdrop for our hike. The trails are well-maintained and offer various options for all skill levels. We particularly enjoyed the Aspen Nature Loop, which provided breathtaking views of the meadow and the surrounding forest. In addition to the hiking, we also enjoyed the peacefulness and tranquility of the meadow. It was the perfect place to relax and take in the beauty of nature. The facilities at Lockett Meadow are also top-notch. The parking area is well-maintained, with restrooms and picnic tables available for visitors. We also appreciated the informational signs and maps provided at the trailhead, which made it easy to navigate the trails and learn more about the area. Overall, our experience at Lockett Meadow was nothing short of amazing. It is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Flagstaff. The meadow is a true natural gem and offers visitors the chance to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Arizona wilderness. We cannot wait to return for another visit in the future.
